Today’s Women Organization - Liberia

Congo Town, Liberia

In December 2007 a group to women under the leadership of Ms. Victoria Zakpah visited Liberia and organized the Today’s Women Organization. A one-day convention was held for the forum at the First Baptist Church, Congo Town, Liberia .

Objective

The objective of the Organization is to mainly focus on the basic human needs of women and children; raise the level of awareness on issues relating to women's health during and after pregnancy and the nurturing and growth of children; and act as a "family group" for women involved.

Report 2008 - 2009

During the first year of operation, the Organization did not implement programmes due to unforeseen circumstances that befell its members.

In February of this year (2009) members of the Organization met to reorganize and strategize methods geared at reinstituting the Organization and to also create awareness for its enhancement.

We are pleased to inform you that the Organization is now in full operation.

Membership

The Today’s Women Organization-Liberia has a membership of 30 Persons since its reinstitution from different communities, mainly in the Congo Town area. Other women have begun to express their interest to join the organization.

Project Implemented 2009

The Today’s Women under the leadership of Mrs. Mandu Tomah during the period under review organized an awareness walk, a Birth Month Contest and a back to school dance for the children. The walk was held on 22 August 2009 , and the Birth Month Contest and Back to School Children dance was held on 24 August 2009 .

We are pleased to inform you that funds generated from the above programmes, were used to sponsor 3 children for the year school 2009/2010.

Other Projects

The organization is presently organizing a raffle draw for December 2009. We wish to solicit gifts from well-wishers for the raffle draw. It is our hope that funds raised from the raffle draw will go toward the sponsoring of more students taking into consideration the high rate of students who are out of school due to lack of tuition and school materials.

Welfare

During the reporting period, the Today’s Women Organization-Liberia also established a welfare system to identify with its members during illness, bereavement and other problems members may be faced with. We are pleased to inform you that three of our members were catered to under this category. One of our members (Linda Benson) is seriously ill at the TB annex and needs serious attention and medical care.

Convention

Convention to elect new crops of officers will be held in December. It is our hope that the new crops of officers will continue to work hard for the enhancement of the Organization.

Summary

During the reporting period, the Today’s Women Organization-Liberia organized and implemented programmes to assist unfortunate children. Also a welfare system was put in place to cater to its members. It is our hope that in the near future we will be able to cater to the needs of children and unfortunate women in society.

Respectfully submitted,

Bendu Gborkorquellie
